Logitech G5
Written by Matt Hewitt
Saturday, 19 April 2008

Logitech has asked us to review the latest installment in their line of gaming mouse the G5 Laser Gaming Mouse.

Before we get going, know that we were not paid for this review.  We did get to keep the mouse and gave it away to one of our hard working admins.  The reviewer (hew488) is attempting to be as unbiased as possible.

Now, on to the review!

Packaging:
The mouse arrived packaged in a brightly-colored, glossy cardboard box.  Inside is a sturdy cardboard frame protecting the mouse, instructions, and software.  Pretty standard stuff.

Look and Feel:
This being the 1st gaming mouse that I have had, and actually used, I was impressed on how amazing it looked, and how it fits perfectly to my hand.  I have used my brother’s G5 before and this one seems to fit my hand better.   The mouse is black with blue cracks all over it, and it looks pretty sweet.  The texture of the mouse is somewhat grippy for even the sweatiest of gamers.   Overall, the mouse looks and feels great for gaming. Now on to the features.

Features:
The Logitech G5 Laser Gaming mouse of course has a laser that guides the mouse.  But, it is also equipped with a scrolling button for those quick weapon changes.  The mouse also features three different speeds for movement for which you can change right on the mouse with a click of a button.  Where you thumb lays there are two buttons one (which I have programmed for in-game voice communication) and another (which I use for knifing in CS:S gun game).  If you flip the mouse over and push the eject button on it an eight slot weight case comes out.  This weight case is easily customizable for the most extreme gamer.  The mouse comes with four 2.7g weights, and four 4.5g weights.  When I take these weights out of the mouse, I can feel the difference.  I prefer the mouse to be loaded as heavy to the end as possible.

Additional features:
If you install the Logitech software (SetPoint) you are able to change even more of the mouse sensitivity settings, and you can customize the settings to certain games.  For example, if you like high mouse sensitivity in CS but prefer a lower sensitivity for TF:2, the program will remember your sensitivity for each game.

Trying It While in Game:
When I first tried to play the Counter Strike: Source Gun Game mod with the G5 mouse I was not impressed.  The gun movement was too fast for me to handle, even when I moved the mouse speed down to slow. After using this mouse for a couple weeks, I have started to get use to the speed of the mouse and was able to get some kills in.  I actually prefer the higher speed now; it just takes some getting use to.

Verdict:
The Logitech G5 Laser Gaming Mouse looks awesome, and for those looking for the precision of a headshot almost every time this is the mouse for you.  This mouse is more customizable than many other mice I have used.  And believe me; I have gone through quite a few mice from a variety of companies.

If you are a hardcore gamer and are worried about your Kill/Death ratio, or your rank on a server you might want to check this mouse out.  It’s definitely worth the investment.
